Hop aboard with Bob Gonzalez Author of A Flicker in the Water Interview

Hello and Thank you for wanting to get to know me & my book “A FLICKER IN THE WATER.  There are many things I hope readers will get from the book.  I hope they are entertained by the stories as they are written with clarity, with humor, also the process undertaken of being prepared to go ocean fishing as well as the camaraderie the crew shares on their trips aboard the Twister.  The PRIMARY benefit above all others is hopefully the reader will come away with a better understanding of our oceans, its inhabitants & what they have meant to mankind through our planet’s evolution.  And how vitally important they are.  One of the reviews for “A FLICKER IN THE WATER” stated how much the reader enjoyed the messages & teachings from the book & how much the reader enjoyed sharing the tales with his kids.””””

If you had to compare this book to any other book out there, which book would it be? If I had to compare “A FLICKER IN THE WATER”  to another book I believe it would probably have to be the classic novel The Old Man & the Sea:  In fact Ernest Hemingway’s granddaughter Mariel wrote the foreword for the book.  She said after having grown up in a family who loved to fish, “A FLICKER IN THE WATER” gave her a great sense of appreciation.  One of the characters in the book grew up in Cuba around the same time “Old Man & the Sea was written.

Hundreds of thousands of books come out every year. Why should someone buy THIS book? A FLICKER IN THE WATER tries to convey a broad tent.  Or since it’s a book about the ocean & fishing it might be better stated trie’s casting a wider net.  It speaks sometimes from a historical, sometimes from a spiritual & sometimes from an educational perspective. It’s told in a simple style hopefully without bogging the reader down.”””””

Who is your target audience? With the wide net we talked about I believe “A FLICKER IN THE WATER’S target audience encompasses readers of all ages, all genders, all geographic areas.  My hope is that experienced seamen can learn something as well as people who have never really experienced being out on the ocean.  Hopefully the book will convey to them a sense of wonder that gives them a better understanding of those huge bodies of water that we are still learning so much about.””””

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? ”My upbringing definitely provided a major role.  I always loved to fish as a kid.  I would fish ponds & lakes as I got older.  The allure of saltwater fishing got me hooked right from the start.  And entering my sixth decade still holds me captive.”””” Classic books like the aforementioned The Old Man and the Sea, Moby Dick, & Treasure Island & more recently The Perfect Storm and passages from the Bible that talk about fishing all had an influence on the writing in “A FLICKER IN THE WATER”.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since publishing your work?

Hearing how much people have really enjoyed reading it.  People who I have never met have given it praise & people who I have known for years have at times been surprised at how much they learned from the book.

How would you describe your writing style? My writing style tries to be easy to understand, going directly to the point with clarity.  It’s upbeat with healthy doses of humor thrown in.””””

Are your characters pure fiction, or did you draw from people you know? Most of the characters are people I know with some exceptions.  I talk about Poseidon & Christopher Columbus in the book although I have never met them. (LOL)

Are you more of a character artist or a plot-driven writer?

I believe it to be a good balance of both.

What do you hope to accomplish with your book other than selling it?

The biggest thing I hope to accomplish is whoever reads the book will remember it for all the good reasons & long after I am gone future generations will discover it & enjoy if for the same reasons.””””

A Flicker in the Water

If you’re yearning for tales about adventure and fun on the open sea, look no further!

The crew welcomes you aboard the Twister, one of the finest fishing vessels in the Gulf of Mexico, as the search is on for the big ones that legends are made of. Blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, swordfish, and more are waiting to be caught, just so long as Bob and his friends have the strength to reel them in.

Told in a fun, engaging style, this book combines elements of drama, heroism, and skill with humor and some educational points about the sea and its inhabitants, with plenty of surprises along the way.

The stories will make you feel like you are out on the water yourself getting ready to land that next great catch you’ll be talking about for the rest of your life. Experienced seamen and land lubbers alike will enjoy this peek into one of the good parts of life with all of its promises and perils.

The use of the word Tales in the subtitle is a play on the word “Tails” that matches the Goliath Grouper on the front cover. When you look into the mouth of the Grouper, we hope you’ll want to look inside this exciting collection of tales.
