Author Interview with The Self-Compassion Project Author Rita Desnoyers

Teaching women how to become emotionally stronger, more effective, and happier by giving yourself a break.

What is the PRIMARY benefit, above all others, that your potential reader will gain from reading this book? Women who read and use my workbook (The Self-Compassion Project) will gain a deeper understanding of who they are- warts and all- and how to make friends with and love and accept all aspects of themselves.

If you had to compare this book to any other book out there, which book would it be? There’s a great book called “Radical Acceptance” by Tara Brach that a friend sent to me after I published The Self-Compassion Project. While her book was longer and was not really a workbook in itself, it talks about a lot of the same subjects- how to love, accept and have compassion for yourself.

Hundreds of thousands of books come out every year. Why should someone buy THIS book? The Self-Compassion Project is a great book for someone who wants simple, practical, and effective ways to improve the most important relationship they have- the relationship with herself. Once practiced, cultivating self-compassion translates into better relationships with others, a sense of calm, peace, confidence and better decisions. The great part is that it doesn’t take pages and pages to understand how to practice. It’s there for you to start and discover almost immediately.

Who is your target audience? This workbook is for women (whether they’re moms or not) between 30-65. They’ve already been hanging out in the self-help section of the bookstore for a while. They are looking for a deeper connection with themselves and they know that life could be different but they’ve tried everything!

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? I wrote this workbook because I needed every one of these tools and strategies for my own personal development. A decade ago, I was not very nice to myself. I had little self-compassion before I started the practices in the book. And it wasn’t because I had horrible parents (they were pretty darn great). It was that I experienced trauma early on in my life. It made a huge impact on me and led me to look for answers to why I never felt like I was enough just the way I am. And it started me writing about all of it. This workbook was my way of not just sharing what I learned but to keep me honest and to continually practice.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since publishing your work? I’ve had women write to me or tell me that The Self-Compassion Project changed their life. They had no idea that so much of their misery sprang from the lack of compassion they had for themselves. It gives me such delight to witness the change in women once they start reading and implementing the exercises.

How would you describe your writing style? I have a very conversational style of writing. I want women to read as if I’m talking directly to them. Nothing fancy. I want them to feel like I’m with them as they write.

Are your characters pure fiction, or did you draw from people you know? Since my book is a workbook, all the stories are true but I’ve changed the identities to protect privacy.

Are you more of a character artist or a plot-driven writer? I’m a non-fiction writer.

What do you hope to accomplish with your book other than selling it? I hope that people use it. I’d love to see copies that are dog eared and written in- revealing that they are being used and gifted to others to use as well. I want this workbook to spark a conversation amongst women about how we can be more gentle and kind with ourselves- and see how that translates to being more gentle and kind with each other.

Finding happiness can be like finding the matching sock your dryer ate long, long ago; you’re sure it’s there, but you just don’t know where to look.

The Self-Compassion Project is the antidote to endless hours of berating yourself for not finding inner peace. You’ve tried meditation, self-help groups, singing bowl therapy and all that other stuff and nothing really “clicks”. Instead of searching for inner peace, why not simply uncover it?

In this down-to-earth, practical and witty self-help guide, Rita Desnoyers-Garcia offers six simple steps to get to the gooey center of your soul, where you can finally relax and enjoy life. Rita’s sound advice is based on years of using her techniques for herself and teaching clients how to use them. The advice Rita gives will help you:

– Become aware of when you are not being your own best friend (who else is going to love you more than you?)

– Notice what’s underneath all those “negative” emotions like anger, fear, sadness, and anxiety- and understand what those emotions are telling you (it maynot be all bad!)

– Create a new outlook on life that is more positive, peaceful, and leaves you feeling more at ease with any circumstance what will come your way (Superwoman, scooch over!)

By the end of the book you’ll understand why self-compassion is the key to finding your true self. It’s the trick to feeling more in-tune with your Higher Self and more aligned with the important people in your life (all 7.53 billion of them!)

Become emotionally stronger, more effective, and happier by giving yourself a break ( and reading this book)!
