No Quiet Water a World War II Historical Fiction Book Review

I recently had the chance to read No Quiet Water, a historical fiction novel by Shirley Miller Kamada.  The characters are thoughtfully-crafted and their journeys will stay with readers long after they finish reading.

No Quiet Water, by author Shirley Miller Kamada gives readers an intimate look at the effects of World War II on Japanese descent. The Miyota family must abandon their farm and leave behind everything they love: their home, livelihood, and beloved dog, Flyer.

Fumio Miyota’s journey to Camp Manzanar is a harrowing one in this World War II historical fiction novel. The story follows Fumio as he navigates growing up in a world that sees him as a threat. Author Shirley Miller Kamada shines a light on this period in American history through the eyes of a young man coming of age.

No Quiet Water is a powerful story for lovers of historical fiction; this book will leave a lasting impression.

From the Book No Quiet Water“The crowd roared. Fumio heard “traitors” and he shivered. He heard “stool pigeons” and felt pain between his eyes. He heard “disloyal” and his face burned for the person so labeled. He heard “inu” and wondered, how does it make sense to insult people by calling them dogs? He worked his way to the edge of the crowd, then out, and walked away preferring the black of the night to the darkness within the mob.”

Through the lens of courage, resilience, and hope, Shirley Miller Kamada paints an unforgettable picture of life during World War II for those held in internment camps. She captures the heartbreaking truth that no matter your background or ethnic origin, everyone deserves to be seen as equal under the law. No Quiet Water is a must-read for World War II history and any coming-of-age fiction fans.

No Quiet Water is a page-turning, emotionally charged read that will leave you thinking about the human cost of war long after you’ve finished the last page. If you’re looking for a historical fiction novel that transports you back to another time and place, I highly recommend giving this one a try.
