This book is a brilliantly written tapestry woven of the perspective of nine siblings that lived a life of turmoil and abuse,that would seem fictional to some. I know first hand how real these stories are as I have known the author for more than fifty years and I have met all the colorful and rich characters in this book.These stories are full of despair, starvation, negligence and fear while bucolic scenes of nature, visions and reference to art and literature and humor spring forth to demonstrate the resilience of this loving and caring family. They built their nest with the scraps they could glean from nature and their wiles. The identities and personification of the birds are evidences of the tenacity, talent, resourcefulness and loving nature of these children(now successful adults) , that had so little could become so strong and buoyant. Their ability to love and forgive is an inspiration to many who have been blessed with having any moment in time with their enchanting spirits. Bravo for such talent and honesty for a story that many would not be so brave to reveal.
